Congratulations to our researchers and students for receiving Best presenter Award in their sessions!

11th Saudi Arabian Section of the Combustion Institute (SAS-CI) Annual Meeting was held on October 12-13, 2021. Due to COVID-19 situation, the meeting was carried out online as a virtual conference via Zoom.

The main theme of this year’s program was “Role of Combustion Research in Circular Carbon Economy”.

This meeting was jointly organized by the Transport Technologies Division, R&DC, Saudi Aramco, and the Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

There were presented research works on topics related to Climate Change and Circular Carbon Economy, Engines and Power Generation Systems with Lower Carbon Footprint, Low Carbon Fuels and CCUS, Hydrogen and ammonia as energy carriers, Fundamental Combustion Research, Measurement Techniques and Modelling, Analysis of Transport Technologies and Policies, Air Quality and Fuel Criteria Pollutants, Applications of ML/AI tools.

The meeting featured four keynote talk:

- Mr. Yehia Khoja, Ministry of Energy: The circular carbon economy national program, the energy innovation program, and the AI center for energy to unlock additional value from the energy sector

- Prof. Bassam Dally, KAUST: New insights into laminar and turbulent sooting flames

- Dr. Umesh Patil, Air Products: The true promise of H2 in Saudi Arabia: Moving beyond the hype

- Prof. Sophie Colson, Tohoku University: Study of ammonia combustion fundamental characteristics

There were a total number of 52 presenters with 8 best presenters:

1-      Zahra Al Ibrahim (Saudi Aramco) on "Machine learning model for gasoline compression ignition at low loads" at Applications of ML/AI tools session

2-      Xiaoyuan Zhang (CCRC, KAUST) on "A decoupling model approach to studying the pyrolysis and oxidation of C6-C10 saturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs)" at Low carbon fuels and CCUS session

3-      Ammar Alkhalifa (CCRC, KAUST) on "Active control of thermoacoustic instabilities in a premixed laminar flame using time phased bursts of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges" at Fundamental combustion research, measurement techniques and modelling session
