Congratulations Andrew R. Maloney on winning the Individual Lab Safety Award organized by the Health, Safety and Environment Department (HSE) at KAUST. Andrew, who is the Lab Manager at the CCRC, building 7 labs, has always given utmost importance to safety protocols and certainly deserves this recognition.

Prof. William Roberts, Director of the Clean Combustion Research Center applauded his win saying "This is a most deserving recognition for Andrew and the entire team working in building 7.  They have worked very diligently over the past year to increase the overall level of safety, led by Andrew, and have really instilled a culture of ‘safety first.’  With all the potential hazards including high pressures, combustible gases, lasers, engines, shock tubes, etc, it is essential that safety always be part of the conversation.  We are very proud of Andrew and the work he as done for the Center.  Well done Andrew!"

Lab safety is often looked at unenthusiastically by students and researchers. But with a unique initiative by Andrew, he was able to make them look forward to it. He started the “Safety Suggestions” Competition, where students were requested to send in their suggestions for improving lab safety. The response was overwhelming. Not only did the students take part in the competition and make it a success, they were able to collectively identify the problem areas and work toward an actual solution. Andrew was able to make a serious matter like safety into something fun fostering a sense of responsibility into each member under his care.

"Having a safety culture is very important for the lab. Safety is a team effort.  Only with continuous action and support from the lab users can we create a work environment where people feel comfortable that they and their colleagues are doing all that is possible for their own and the lab's protection" said Andrew.

We are indeed proud of your achievement and wish you all the best in your future efforts!
