Seminar by Prof. Indrek S. Wichman


CCRC organized a seminar on "The Tulip Flame in the TJI Engine: Pre-Chamber Influence of Flame Propagation on in-Cylinder Turbulent Jet Combustion" by Prof. Indrek S. Wichman on Tuesday, Nov 10, 2015 at Bldg. 9, Lecture hall 2, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.  

Professor Wichman’s research interests are in fundamental aspects of combustion including flame spread, ignition, flame quenching, and recently engine combustion and detailed flame-surface interaction theory and modeling. These interests are reflected in contract support from NASA on microgravity combustion experiments on flame spread in space (an ISS experiment) and NSF/DOE on the process of Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) in SI engines. Recent work has examined fundamental aspects of flame-surface interaction. Professor Wichman has taught a wide variety of courses including undergraduate and graduate Combustion, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and applied mathematics. Dr. Wichman is currently a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Automotive Research Laboratories, Michigan State University, USA  




The implications of the tulip flame was discussed in the context of Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) in a spark ignition (SI) engine. The TJI-concept engine employs a pre-chamber in which the premixed mixture is ignited. As this mixture burns the hot combustion products are injected into the main combustion chamber in the form of a transient jet. This jet of hot combustion products is the main chamber ignition source. Tests in the MSU Rapid Compression Machine (RCM) indicate that increased main chamber combustion rates are produced for lean mixtures. Preliminary tests in the MSU single-cylinder research engine yield encouraging results. These results, along with images of TJI results for the RCM, were presented and discussed. TA close connection exists between the fundamental tulip flame and the TJI engine research in the form of a theoretical correlation that describes the pre-chamber injection process. The theoretical correlation requires numerical or experimental input to fix parameters. This research is preliminary and therefore will emphasize  current concepts and possibilities.
