Some Great Engines

The lecture discusses aspects of some important automotive engines and engine families since the dawn of the car to the present day.  Some of the things that made the engines unique or important technological leaders are illustrated, together with historical factors aiming to put them in context.  The order of presentation is broadly chronologically so that the way in which automotive engine technology has progressed can be seen, together with the occasional introduction of some interesting concepts which have remained niche even if they provide specific advantages.

The choice of individual engines is necessarily personal, but whether the audience agrees with it or not it is hoped that the lecture will provide some food for thought on why and how the internal combustion engine has become so important and ingrained in our daily lives and why, because of its contribution to modern society, it should really be applauded rather than vilified…
