Numerical and Experimental Studies of Lean, Diluted Turbulent Combustion

Combustion devices are expected to be operated leaner, more diluted, and possibly highly preheated thermochemical conditions. Under such conditions, interactions between propagating flames and spontaneously igniting local mixtures occur frequently, and modelling these localized events are important. Also, successful forced ignition of such mixtures requires understanding of interplay between turbulence and scalar transports. In our group at Tokyo Institute of Technology, turbulent combustion at under extreme conditions is studied by means of direct numerical simulations and advanced laser diagnostics for fundamental understanding of these combustion physics and turbulent combustion modelling.
